Welcoming the Old New Teacher

It's been difficult for me these last two months, and I haven't been posting much.  At first, I thought perhaps it was just the difficulty of an election year, which bombards us with so much information that it is difficult to sort. On reflection, though, I realized I was struggling with a bout of frustration and anxiety regarding school.  A teacher leader I met via Twitter years ago has been there for me, and reminded me that there are things I cannot fix immediately.

One of my teacher friends recently transferred schools. She is teaching the same developmental age group, the same content area, in the same district, at a school less than ten minutes from her previous school.

 

But that is where the similarities end. These two schools, in reality, are worlds apart.

What You Want is Not What You Plan

I drove by the building that housed my dream job today.  
Long ago, as a young girl, age 7, I wanted to work there.
I imagined being part of the change. 
Making decisions that made things better.
And I daydreamed, even then, schools that were different.
And I thought that meant that it was about the leaders.
That was my plan.  Boy, was it a good one.

Virtual Learning Communities and the Adjacent Possible

When I started teaching in 1987, many colleagues had an "EZ-Grader" - a cardboard device they used to calculate a student's percent on an assignment by matching up the number of correct answers with the total number of problems. And by-golly, you can still buy an EZ-Grader for under $2.00.

Then came the 90s and as the world moved from atoms to bits, electronic grade books became one of about a billion adjacent possibles, and most teachers trashed their EZ-Graders. (Seriously, who actually buys an EZ-Grader in 2016?)
